No one is Irreplaceable!

August 20, 2008

Capello has sent out a clear warning to the England players ahead of their preparation for the World Cup Qualifiers and that is that not even the captain is guaranteed his place in the team if he doesn’t perform.

“For me it is important to be captain but it is important what moment the players are in,” Capello said. “He will not be sure to play.

“The first eleven will be the best players for me, not because they are the captain. We have a vice captain, Rio Ferdinand.”

Capello is well aware that if he doesn’t get results he is the one who will get the chop.

“Sometimes in my career I spoke with the captain but usually I decide,” he said.

“I prefer that I decide everything. Always I speak with my staff and ask different questions. But the last decision is mine.

“I think it is very important to know a lot of players as captains. You have to know the players and then I choose from this. Not because someone told me this player is good, but because I made the decision.”

Capello has often kept the captain the same at his previous clubs but it was widely speculated that Ferdinand was getting the job and even Terry thought he might get it.

“I would have been really disappointed and I’m sure the players who didn’t get it feel the same way,” Terry said. “It’s been announced now and we can move forward.

“I was standing next to Rio and the first thing he did was shake my hand, which is great and shows what kind of man and character he is.

“You hear little whispers and with the form that Rio has been in and what Man Utd have achieved I did think he would get it.

“Rio has been in great form for Manchester United in the last couple of years. What he has achieved has been an example. We can all learn from that and it’s great that I beat players like that to the job.”

Terry plays a huge role at Chelsea and has held the dressing room together at times but he knows that his powers will be diluted somewhat as England captain.

“The manager said he takes control of all the tactics and all those big decisions and it’s my job to keep the players moving forward,” he said.

“When things are going smoothly it’s easy to run but when you have a defeat or people aren’t playing it’s my responsibility to keep these players happy and keep things moving forward.”

Olympic men’s semi finals Results

August 20, 2008

Nigeria 4-1 Belgium
Argentina 3-0 Brasil

Argentina and Nigeria are set to play each other in the final of the men’s Olympic football tournament in Beijing’s main stadium, the Bird’s Nest, on August 23rd.

Nigeria thumped Belgium 4-1 in their Olympic semi-final tie.

The African side opened up scoring in the 17th minute. After an hour of even-sided play, the Belgians fell apart and conceded three more goals, only able to add a late consolation goal in the 88th minute.

Brasil was beaten 3 goals to nil by a lithe Argentina side. I had the pleasure of watching the exciting fixture live at the Beijing Worker’s Stadium.

Plenty of Argentines and Brasilians had shown up at the match, as well as many Beijing-ers dressed in appropriate football attire. Cheers of “Jai-ho!” (”Go!” in Mandarin) resounded across the stadium of 53,000 spectators.

The star of the night was surely Atletico Madrid striker Sergio “Kun” Aguero, who added his first two goals of the tournament at the most critical of times.

The Atleti forward was alert and ready to pounce at every moment, and it was no surprise when it was “El Kun” who converted a cross by Benfica’s Angel Di Maria to break the deadlock in the 53rd minute. Within 5 minutes, Aguero scored another in the same fashion.

Brasil had Lucas Leiva sent off for a tackle on Liverpool teammate Javier Mascherano in the penalty area. Argentine captain Riquelme easily converted a spot kick. With 10 men, and 3 goals down, Brasil had very little chance of getting back into the game.

Only to add to Brasil’s woes, Thiago Neves was sent off in the 84th minute, again for a tackle on Mascherano.

A teary-eyed Ronaldinho quickly left the pitch at the final whistle, perhaps to avoid the many cameras focused on his face. The Brasilian playmaker, who wanted to prove at these Games that his abilities to lead and perform are not fading, will have to do so when he joins Serie A side AC Milan and must be satisfied with a chance for Bronze in a match against Belgium on the 22nd of August.

Brasil, USA thump opponents in the Olympic women’s final

August 19, 2008

Olympic women’s semi-final scores:
Brasil 4-1 Germany
USA 4-2 Japan

Both Brasil and the United States of America overcame early conceded goals to thump opponents Germany and Japan in the Olympic women’s tournament semi-finals.

Birgit Prinz of Germany scored in the 10th minute.  Brasil then replied with four goals by Forminga (43′), Cristiane (49′, 75′) and Marta (53′).

Similarly, the US overcame early Japanese dominance in midfield and a 15th minute goal by Japan’s Shinobu Ohno.  American Angela Hucles equalised and Lory Chalupny soon added another right before the half.

The US completey dominated the second half, and two amazing goals came easily.  Heather O’Reilly chipped the ball over the keeper in the 70th minute, and Hucles added another in the 80th from an impossible angle that was nearly parallel with the goal line.

Japan added a second goal too late, and will have to settle for playing Germany in the Bronze medal match on the 21st of August.

Brasil plays the US in the Gold medal match also on the 21st of August.

Olympic Quarter Final Results

August 17, 2008

Brasil 2-0 Cameroon
Belgium 3-2 Italy
Argentina 2-1 Netherlands
Nigeria 2-0 Cote d’Ivoire

Brasil beat Cameroon in extra time to seal a spot in the final four.

Two penalties from Giuseppe Rossi were not enough to defeat a powerful Belgian side. Belgium, who played with only 10 men for the majority of the match, came through with intelligent plays to beat the Azzurrini 3-2.

An early goal from Messi was nullified with an equaliser from the Dutch. The contest went into extra time, ultimately with Angel Di Maria scoring the winner in the 105th minute.

Nigeria came past Cote d’Ivoire in an all-African quarter-final clash, winning a place in the last four.

Powerhouses Brasil will clash with title-holders Argentina in a semi-final on the 19th of August. Belgium is set to play Nigeria on the same date.

The gold-medal match will be played on the 23rd of August. The bronze-medal match will be played on the previous day (22nd).

Women’s Olympic semi-finals: Brasil to face off with Germany; 3rd placed Japan plays top seed USA

August 16, 2008

USA 2-1 Canada

Angela Hucles gave the US a lead in the 12th minute, but Christine Sinclair tied it up with a brilliant 22-meter shot in the 30th minute.  After a 2 hour suspension (due to lightning), Natasha Kai headed in an extra time winner to give the USA a spot in the final four of the Women’s Olympic football tournament.

Brasil 2-1 Norway

Brasil easily came past Norway.  Star forwards Daniela and Marta took advantage of mistakes by the Norwegians an converted into beautiful goals.  Daniela drove a 30-yard shot in the 44th minute, and Marta sealed the deal in the 57th with a chip over the Norwegian keeper.  Brasil held onto their lead even after the Norwegians were given a penalty in the 81st minute.

Germany 2-0 Sweden

Two goals in extra time gave Germany a win over Sweden.  They play Brasil in the semi-final on the 18th of August.

China 0-2 Japan

3rd-placed in their group, Japan beat out first-placed China through an early goal by Japanese star footballer Homare Sawa.  Yuki Nagasato added a goal in the 80th minute to seal the deal.  The two goals give Japan a semi-final game versus the United States on the 18th of August.

Big Decisions and Interests for Croatian Internationals

August 15, 2008

Corluka toTottenham? This was the big question last week when Tottenham made a bid on the Croatian international, Vedran Corluka. It has been speculated that he could be destined for a season with the Spurs and national team mate Luka Modric. He is currently at Manchester City where he was bought only last year from Dinamo Zagreb in Croatia. According to the Daily Mail and the Croatian Times, Spurs showed interest in the right-back defender a year ago before his move to England. Manchester City coach, Mark Hughs, was undecided about selling his top class player to the Lilywhite’s side of London. However, the decision was to be made on Monday August 11th, and it seems that Corluka will be staying with Manchester City. Although, if the transfer had worked as planned and Spurs had paid off the price-tag on David Villa and/or Andrei Arshavin, it would have brought their summer spending total to about 70 million.

Some more news out of England concerns Eduardo Da Silva, know as Dudu in Croatia. He is more than ready to come back to football with Arsenal, but a bit more recovery time from his injury is still needed. He is now back in London for the end of his rehabilitation process, following about four months of recovery in Brazil. The last time we heard from Dudu he was waiting with team mates at Arsenal for his test results. In an interview with Arsenal TV he stated, “I hope that I will find out exactly how long it will take me to come back to training with my team mates. I want to find out, as well, when they think I can play again. My hope is that it is before Christmas.”

Some top news coming from Germany is about Croatian midfielder, Ivan Rakitic and how he is on his way to a career of success. Franz Beckenbauer predicts, “He will come up in the world;” after his performance at the Euro he should be one step closer. His professional football debut was in 2005, on the 25th of September, where he played in Basel, Switzerland. During his second season there he scored 11 goals in 34 games, and was named the league’s best young player of the year. Last summer, he signed on with Germany’s Shalke 04 and has been doing quite well. This summer, Italian side Juventus has shown some interest in the young Croatian. Rakitic responded to their interest by saying, “Knowing major European teams such as Juventus are interested in me is a great honor.”

New Scotland Shirt Released

August 14, 2008

As Scotland prepare to take on Northern Ireland in a friendly next week before their first match in the qualifiers for the 2010 World Cup finals they have launched their new home kit.

The new Scotland home kit made by Diadora will be unveiled today and will be available to buy from tomorrow. The shirt is said to have the Scottish football tradition but with Italian styling. The rumours surrounding the design of the shirt seem to point to a style based on some of the older more traditional looking Scotland shirts.

Diadoras European sales Director commented on the shirt saying: “The partnership between the Scottish F.A. and Diadora has grown with each new kit produced for the national team utilising all of our design, technologies and expertise in the technical apparel business which has seen, in our opinion some of the greatest kits produced in the modern game. Following the near qualification in the recent European Championships and previous success of the Home, Away and 3rd kits we’ve had a challenge to produce a product suitable for the Players, staff and fans alike to a level to which they have come accustomed too and most importantly deserve, but we have!!

We’ve researched the history, heritage and requirements of the team to design a new Home kit which we hope will inspire the team to great performances in the forthcoming world cup qualifying campaign and see them into the Finals in South Africa 2010.”

Scotland Manager George Burley when asked about the shirt said: “Representing your country is one of the proudest achievements any Scottish footballer can ever hope to achieve. You can scale the heights of club football, but the feeling you get when you pull on that famous dark blue jersey is almost impossible to beat. Diadora have really done their homework with this new kit. It has all the hallmarks of the great Scotland strips of old and I know that it will help inspire the current generation of stars as we set out on the road to South Africa. The fans are going to love it.”

Let’s hope they can actually get to show off their new top at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

The shirt is available for pre-order today from http://www.uksoccershop.com/index.html

Finnan back in Republic squad

August 14, 2008

Steve Finnan has decided to come out of International retirement to try and help the Republic of Ireland reach the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

Trapattoni persuaded the player to come out of retirement and will line up against Norway on Wednesday and could play a key role in the World Cup qualifiers.

Andy O’Brien has not reversed his decision and Stephen Ireland has chosen to not yet make himself available for recall but hasn’t ruled it out.

Stephen Ireland hasn’t played for the Republic since he withdrew from the squad last year after lying about the death of his grandmothers.
