Nasri targets World Cup place

December 31, 2009

France may have qualified for the 2010 World Cup but their midfield hopefuls will have to deal with the added competition of Arsenal midfielder Samir Nasri, who has spoken of his determination to become a first-team regular for the European powerhouse before the mega event in South Africa.

While, the 22-year-old made his debut for Les Bleus in 2007 with 15 caps to his name, the majority of his appearances for his country have come as a substitute.

And the desire to become a permanent member of Raymond Domenech’s starting line-up is a target Nasri has set for himself, as he believes it is the time to begin to make his potential count.

Ahead of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, the former Marseille man has been working to overcome the fitness problems which have blighted his time at Arsenal.

He believes he is in a better physical condition and holds an international ambition, telling L’Equipe: “I want to reach a new level in the French team, not just coming into the group and watching.

“I believe I can have a position in a 4-2-3-1 formation. I play on a wing for Arsenal so it can offer me more opportunities. I am 22-years-old. I have to reach international level now.

“The World Cup is not an obsession, but I am thinking about it a lot. The priority is to play a lot of games for Arsenal.

“But I will start to think about being in the France squad for the friendly against Spain (on March 3). I have worked hard physically.”

McLeish thinks Hart is ready for England

December 30, 2009

Birmingham City manager Alex McLeish believes that goalkeeper Joe Hart is ready to battle for a spot in England’s squad for the 2010 World Cup.

Six months ahead of the tournament, England boss Fabio Capello is still uncertain about his pick for the nation’s number 1 jersey in South Africa.

“I know that Fabio Capello and his staff like him,” McLeish said.

“He already has an edge and his recent performances have certainly shown he can be a candidate.

“His form has been brilliant and let’s face it, he is looking a big, powerful bloke between those sticks right now.”

The 22-year-old goalie joined Birmingham on loan from Manchester City at the start of the season, and his eight clean sheets helped the side to their current eighth spot in the Premier League.

Despite that performance, Hart himself remains modest: “If I do well then it will push me forward. I try not to think about it. If it comes, then great.”

Capello gives Beckham boost

December 29, 2009

In an interview with La Gazzetta dello Sport on Monday, England manager Fabio Capello insisted that a “fit” David Beckham would be included his squad for next summer’s World Cup in South Africa.

“If he plays well, and is fit, I will include him in my squad,” Capello told the Italian sport publication in an interview published Monday. “I pay attention to quality, and David has a lot.”

Beckham, 34, holds an England non-goalkeeper record with 115 international appearances, but he has feared for his place in the Three Lions squad after the end of the Major League Soccer season. He is set to link up with AC Milan on another loan deal from Los Angeles Galaxy, similar to the move he made after last season in the USA.

Capello added that a strong performance for Milan in Serie A will definitely go a long way toward determining if Beckham will be a member of his 23-man squad for South Africa, where they open play on 13 June against the United States.

“He will do good for Milan because he has a good head on his shoulders,” Capello added.

Kalou keen to face England

December 28, 2009

Chelsea forward Salomon Kalou has told Sky Sports that he wants Ivory Coast show their strength against England at the South African World Cup.

The two sides have been drawn in different groups for the finals in South Africa next summer, but they could meet – should they progress to the semi-final stage.

Kalou was upset Ivory Coast were not drawn alongside England in Group C. Kalou’s national team landed in Group G alongside Brazil, Portugal and North Korea what has been called the “Group of Death”.

When asked if he was disappointed not to be playing against England in the Group Stage, Kalou told Sky Sports, “Yes, because when you go to these type of competitions you want to play against the best and prove yourself.

“So playing against England was an opportunity for us to see if we are a good team.

“The draw was not on our side with England but, you never know, maybe we will meet them in later rounds.”

Ivory Coast’s first match is against Portugal on June 15, 2010 followed by a meeting with Brazil before concluding the group-stage against minnows North Korea.

He said, “We can go as far as we want. We should not be afraid of other teams and just play our game. At the end, it is 11 against 11.”

Socceroos Attention Turns to Asia

December 24, 2009

The World Cup draw has been done and the excitement and buzz that that generated has died down. Now focus moves to other things namely Asian Cup qualification.

After two games, Australia had one point and the thought of missing out on qualifying for the tournament was a possibility. If this would have been the case, it would be a massive embarrassment. After using A-League players for the first two matches, Pim Verbeek went for the stars and this paid off with two wins against Oman in successive matches.

This puts Australia in a much better situation. They still aren’t out of the woods but at least they control their own destiny. Currently they are level on seven points with Kuwait with Oman on four points and Indonesia on three. As long as Australia don’t lose against Kuwait they should be ok. Soccer betting believes their qualification to be a done deal.

If Indonesia and Oman draw in the other match, they will effectively deny each other the chance to qualify.

The only problem for Verbeek is that he won’t be able to field any of the players who play in the Premier League as it is the busiest time of the year for the English clubs. The final match which is at home  to Indonesia is also on a non-FIFA date.

Still Australia should qualify from this point and if they don’t, it’s their own fault. Effectively not to qualify they will need to lose both of their remaining matches.

Following this, they only other game they have scheduled before the World Cup is a farewell friendly at the MCG in May. There will also be some warm-up games in South Africa.

All in all, it was a pretty good year for the Socceroos. They went to Yokohama and had a good 0-0 draw and defeated them 2-1 in the return leg. There were losses; to Kuwait and to South Korea.

But there were also some good wins most notable a 3-0 away win to Ireland. They hosted the Dutch in a dour 0-0 draw which was eminently forgettable.    At the end of the day, the most important task of the Socceroos was to qualify for the World Cup and they did that.

2010 will obviously have different objectives most of which will be focused on South Africa. They will be looking to at the very least make the knockout stage of the tournament and to do that they will need to play very very well.

Oar, Kemp, Velaphi make Socceroos Squad

December 21, 2009

Australia coach Pim Verbeek has named three new faces in a 23-man squad for the upcoming Asian Cup qualifier against Kuwait in Kuwait City on January 6 next year.

Brisbane Roar’s Tommy Oar, Melbourne Victory’s Matthew Kemp and Perth Glory’s Tando Velaphi have made the Socceroos for the first time, in a squad that features 15 players from the A-League. Central Coast Mariners goalkeeper Danny Vukovic has been selected in the Socceroos squad previously but could make his senior debut if he takes the field against Kuwait. Victory striker Archie Thompson has earned a recall after nearly a year out of the national side, as has Sydney FC defender Simon Colosimo, who last played for Australia in a friendly against China in 2007.

Eight overseas-based players join the A-League contingent.  No UK-based players are available.

The Socceroos will head to Kuwait looking to seek revenge for a 1-0 defeat when the two teams clashed in Canberra on March 3 earlier this year.

The squad will start assembling for a week-long training camp in Dubai from December 27 ahead of the Kuwait match.

The Socceroos sit equal top of Group B with Kuwait, and victory would secure them a place at the 2011 Asian Cup.
