Everton hope to take Donovan on loan
December 11, 2009
Premier League club Everton have confirmed they are in talks to sign USA forward Landon Donovan on loan from Los Angeles Galaxy.
Major League Soccer’s season has finished and any deal to secure Donovan would be similar to the one that will see Galaxy team-mate David Beckham re-join AC Milan next month.
Everton chief executive Robert Elstone said: “Landon is a player (manager) David Moyes has identified as someone he would like to bring to the club.
“We are working to make that happen and hope we can reach agreement soon with all the appropriate parties.”
If negotiations are successful the forward would join Everton on January 2.
Donovan is part of the United States squad that will compete in the 2010 World Cup finals. They are in Group C with England, Algeria and Slovenia and face England in their opening match on June 12.

England v Egypt friendly arranged
December 10, 2009
The Egyptian FA has confirmed ongoing negotiations to play England at Wembley on March 3 as part of England’s preparations for the World Cup.
England manager Fabio Capello is keen to play a friendly against a team with a similar style to England’s Group C opponents Algeria, and has identified Egypt as his preferred opponents.
Hany Abou Rida of the Egyptian FA told Eurosport Arabia, “After the World Cup draw, some officials from the English FA and Fabio Capello talked to me about the same issue.
“They all asked for a match with the Egyptian team at Wembley next March, and we are now discussing their offer within the Egyptian FA.”
The Pharaohs are the reigning African champions, but will not be in South Africa after losing to Algeria in a chaotic, violent and close play-off in Sudan last month.
Algeria topped Egypt in their World Cup decider by one goal to nothing to deny Egypt’s bid to qualify for the World Cup.
Capello said a game against Egypt would be: “A nice choice to know the style of the North Africans.”
England has drawn the United States, Algeria and Slovenia in Group C in the World Cup Group Stage.
More Draw Analysis
December 10, 2009
And so the draw has been done. Now the tournament has some shape and we can see how it is going to be. Speculation is a fool’s paradise though. Anyone with experience of the World Cup knows that you go throw away the form guide. Yes the heavyweights usually prevail but which ones?
In 2002, Germany took on Brazil in the final but who would have thought that defending champions France would not score a single goal? Who would have predicted that Portugal wouldn’t advance while South Korea who had never won a match before would? Who would have though that Turkey would make it as far as the semi-finals?
Then again should anyone be surprised about anything after Cameroon defeated defending champion Argentina in the opening game of the 1990 World Cup? Wasn’t this the shock to end all shocks? This was a million times more surprising than anything we will ever see again. Even more so as African sides were no where as strong as they are now. This would be the equivalent of North Korea defeating Brazil.
Having said all that, it is a pretty reasonable draw. This is because the quality of world football has considerably risen over the years.
Group A contains South Africa, Mexico, Uruguay and France. This is a fair group because France cancels out the hosts who shouldn’t have been a seed. France were one of two European sides who were unlucky in not being seeded.
Portugal were the other one and find themselves in a group alongside Brazil, North Korea and the Ivory Coast. North Korea are obviously an unknown entity, but without the comforts of playing in Pyongyang this should leave the other three playing for two spots. Soccer betting isn’t sure what to do here and is putting a lot of weight on the Portugal - Ivory Coast clash.
In 1994, Argentina were in a group with Nigeria, Bulgaria and Greece where they finished third. Scratch out Bulgaria and insert South Korea. Greece didn’t score a goal then and should have a much tighter defence this time round.
England find themselves alongside Algeria, Slovenia and the USA. Slovenia made it after defeating Russia in a play-off. You would think that England and the USA would advance.
In the Round of 16 they are paired with Group D’s Germany, Australia, Serbia and Ghana. Serbia topped their qualifying group which included France. It will be a tough group and on their own continent Ghana will be a handful. You would expect Germany to finish top, but don’t discount Australia.
After a run of horror draws, Netherlands will be pleased with theirs. Denmark, Japan and Cameroon don’t pose that many headaches.
World Champions Italy got the dream group of Slovakia, Paraguay and New Zealand.
Finally Group H is an interesting one of Spain, Switzerland, Honduras and Chile. You would expect Spain to advance, but then again its Spain we’re talking about.
So there you have it. There will be a lot of speculation until 11 June which is when it all gets under way. Until then, take everything you read with a grain of salt.

New Zealand Home Shirt World Cup 2010
December 9, 2009
New Zealand have qualified for the 2010 World Cup, only their second appearance at the tournament with the first coming back in 1982. New Zealand have however qualified three times for the Confederations Cup but have never made it past the first round and have only had one point from all three tournaments.
New Zealand don’t have a high quality domestic league with most of their international players playing overseas. New Zealand qualified for the 2010 World Cup after finishing top of the table and therefore winning the OFC Nations Cup which earned them a playoff against Bahrain who they defeated 1-0 over two legs.
The new Zealand World Cup shirt has been released with the shirt expected to be popular with fans due to the fact that they haven’t appeared at the tournament for so long. Many will never have seen the New Zealand kit before the tournament and how well they do at the World Cup we will have to wait and see but they certainly go in as underdogs into the tournament but that could mean that they cause a few surprises.
The new 2010-11 New Zealand home football shirt is available in sizes S, M, L, XL, XXL with the official New Zealand football kit shirt printing available for the New Zealand soccer jerseys of all your favourite playersIvan Vicelich, Ryan Nelsen, Shane Smeltz, Chris Killen and Simon Elliot. You can buy the New Zealand home shirt online at UKSoccershop.com, the leading online supplier of official World Cup shirts.
Defoe says Spain are favourites
December 9, 2009
Tottenham Hotspur and England striker Jermain Defoe may be a part of a strong English contingent but he has no doubts regarding favourites to lift the World Cup in South Africa next year.
The 27-year-old feels European champions Spain are rightfully favorites to win next summer’s extravagant football tournament.
The former West Ham United and Portsmouth striker is fully backing England’s chances but admits Spain will start as favourites.
“Spain are a great side, with top players queuing up to get a game – and they’re the European champions, so I guess they’re the team to beat. Let’s hope we meet them in the final,” he told Zoo.
“Germany are a great footballing nation and they always do well in tournaments. It’d be brilliant to face them, what with all the history.
“They’re a well-organised side and they’re tough to break down, so it’ll be a hard game – if it happens.
“All the usual countries that are used to playing at this stage will be in contention.
“Brazil are more solid, Holland can play and Italy are the kings of doing enough to get through. But once it gets underway, anything can happen.
“An African team has to win the World Cup some time. I just hope it’s not this time! But if you look at Ivory Coast, they’re physically so strong and athletic and they have Didier Drogba, who’s really flying at the moment.
“But the group draw went brilliantly. It couldn’t have gone better! My heart was pounding when the names came out the pot but, as an England player and fan, I’d take that.
“As players, you’re focused on your club. But when the draw’s been made and you know who you’ve got, it feels like it’s really happening!
“To be honest, I think the other teams will be more worried about us. When you look at our set-up, with the manager, the squad, and players that can make an impact, you have to fear England.
“Obviously you don’t want to be too confident – but we’re going out there to win it. Mr Capello says we can beat anyone and the players believe that.”
Uruguay Home Shirt World Cup 2010
December 8, 2009
Uruguay have won the World Cup twice back in 1930, the first every World Cup, and in 1950. Uruguay are the smallest country ever, by a considerable distance, to have won the World Cup with a population of only 4 million people the next one up from them is Argentina with 40 million people. Uruguay won more international titles in the 20th century than any other country and have won the Copa America a record 14 times.
The fortunes of Uruguay at the World Cup have not unfortunately come close to their previous triumphs with Uruguay failing to qualify for 5 of the last 8 World Cups. Uruguay have however qualified for the 2010 World Cup so we will get to see the Uruguay World Cup shirt at next years tournament.
Uruguay finished 5th in their World Cup qualifying campaign which earned them a spot in the play-off against Coast Rica which they won 2-1 which is why we will see the new Uruguay shirt participating in South Africa and not Costa Rica. Although Uruguay have not participated at too many World Cup’s recently they have still done very well in South American football and should not be taken lightly at the World Cup.
The new 2010-11 Uruguay home football shirt is available in sizes S, M, L, XL, XXL with the official Uruguay football kit shirt printing available for the Uruguay soccer jerseys of all your favourite players Diego Lugano, Martin Caceres, Luis Suarez, Diego Forlan and Sebastian Abreu.
