World Cup Group D

Germany

How often do we say the same thing about the Germans? Not the best team in the world but a footballing nation which mentally know how to win and how to grind out results. Last three of four tournaments they have got to at least the semi finals. While the likes of England have better players, not many teams have the winning mind set the Germans have.

Mentally though Germany have been dealt a blow that may be too much even for them to recover from. The injury to Michael Ballack is the same to Germany as England losing Rooney. While Chelsea fans have never seen Ballack at his best, he is a different player for his country. So often he has stepped up in the big games with inspirational performances and crucial goals.

Psychologically it is a huge blow to Germany’s chances.

Prediction- 1^st

Expect Germany’s mentality to be in evidence from the start. All the other teams in group D are capable of causing Germany problems. Just watch how Germany grind out the results.

Ghana

Like Germany Ghana’s preparations have been rocked by an injury withdrawal from a Chelsea midfielder. The only difference is while the Germans still have the likes of Podolski, Klose and others to step in Essien is Ghana’s star player who the team is built around. A few months ago the country believed they could fly the flag for the continent but now need to somehow pick their morale up.

Prediction- 3^rd

You can make a case for all four teams to qualify but I think Ghana will just miss out. If Essien was playing I may have changed my mind.

Serbia

Fist ever appearance at the World Cup under the name Serbia (formerly Yugoslavia and Serbia Montergario). Finished above France to top their group achieving some stunning results on home soil. Remains to be seen if they can take that form into a World Cup but should not fear the other teams in group.

Prediction-4^th

With Vidic in defense Serbia will be hard to beat. This will be one of the tightest groups, one with allot of draws and a point could separate 4th and 2nd.

Australia

Like any Australia sports team ultra competitive who hate to lose. In last World Cup won many people over with their never say die spirit losing to eventual winners Italy only thanks to a late controversial penalty. There are concerns down under that Australia are no longer an unknown quantity and that this time round teams will be ready for them.

Prediction- 2^nd

You can make an argument for Serbia and Ghana to qualify with Germany but I feel Australia have that extra bit of charisma to snatch second spot just like four years ago.
