Who Will Win World Cup
June 10, 2010
World Cup Group E
Holland
The Dutch are a country who have graced the World Cup over the years with some beautiful football. If trophies were won purely on how you play then Holland would be one of the most successful teams. Like England though Holland seem to always find a way to not realize their potential. Four years ago they were let down by their ill discipline as they went out to Portugal in the dirtiest game in World Cup history.
Most of the time though it is rowing with each other which has led to under achievement. This happened a couple of weeks ago when Robin Van persie gave his opinion of who Holland should start in attack. Dirk Kuyt was offended that his team mate did not include him as one of the world class attackers. Van persie did make a good point though, if Holland start with Van Persie, Robben, Van der Vart and Sneijder then Holland will frighten defenses.
Robben (as I write battling to be fit for the tournament) has had a fantastic season. Sneijder has just won the Champions League and might just be the star of the competition. Meanwhile Van Persie has missed most of Arsenals season so will be relatively fresh.
Prediction- 1st
Defensively you can get at Holland but I just cannot see how a team will stop them from scoring.
Denmark
As usual Denmark come to the World Cup as an organized outfit. The feeling in Denmark is that they have had better sides yet with the mixture of youth and experience Denmark should be competitive.
Denmark topped a difficult qualifying group finishing above the likes of Portugal and Sweden, performances which should give them confidence and belief.
Nicholas Bendter finished the season with Arsenal in great goal scoring form and has a swagger / almost arrogance about him to use the competition as a stepping stone to show the world his talents.
Prediction- 2nd
Game with Cameroon could decide second place. However I predict Denmark and Bendter to be the surprise package of the tournament.
Cameroon
While Roger Miller has done so much for Cameroon football his comments regarding Samuel Etoo could harm the Africans chances. The Inter Milan strikers threat of not participating in the tournament is most likely an angry outburst and it is not realistic that any African would miss a World Cup in their own continent. Why though would Miller want to upset Cameroons star player, the one player who Cameroon need focused and in the right state of mind?
Prediction- 3rd
For Cameroons sake they need to hope that they have a happy Samuel Etoo he is their best hope in an otherwise average looking team.
Japan
Takeshiokada’s aim of reaching the semi finals was met with wide spread laughter from most pundits. After watching the recent friendly with England though there is no reason why Japan should not challenge for second spot in the group. Staring in their fourth World Cup in a row Japan come into the tournament in a confident mood after yet again dominating in their Asian qualifying campaign.
Prediction-4th
With them playing Holland in their second game it is crucial Japan get off to a positive start. Seeing as they have qualified from their group once in their three attempts and taking into account the other three teams World Cup pedigree Takeshiokada target of a semi final place seems highly ambitious and unrealistic.
