Ballack to captain Germany
March 16, 2009
Chelsea midfielder Michael Ballack has been promised the Germen captaincy at the 2010 South African World Cup if the Germans qualify.
Germany are currently top of their group, 4 points ahead of Guus Hiddinks Russia, though the Russians have played one game less.
Last year the 32-year-old Chelsea midfielder had a very public falling out with Germany coach Joachim Low.
Ballack had suggested Low should show senior players more respect and loyalty, but subsequently apologised.
“If Ballack is fit he will be there as captain in 2010,” said Low.
“Of course it was a very strong conflict with Michael,” added Low. “But we live in football, not in some holy world. You will always have conflicts.
“We all made mistakes last year. All of us.”
On 28 March Germany face Liechtenstein in a World Cup qualifier before playing Wales in Cardiff on 1 April as Low’s side attempt to qualify for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.
Ballack, who featured in Chelsea’s 1-0 over Manchester City on Sunday, has made 90 appearances and scored 39 goals for Germany.
