Belgian World Cup History

October 8, 2008

1930 Uruguay:
The first world cup for this young team was not a succes. Besides some Belgain referees in the tournament, Belguim was never able to win a game in the group stage and they had 0 points after 3 games resulting in a very early departure home for the red devils.

1934 Italy (first round)
This campaign was a pretty good one with a decent team. Bernard Voorhoof was the top scorer with the Belgains and striker in form. he led the devils after the group stage to the first round against germany. They eventually lost the game 5-2(2 goals by Voorhoof).Germany  was to be the bronze medal winner of the world cup. A very worthy oponnent…

1938 France (first round)
Right in their backyard, The Devils where not able to get past a very strong…French team. The hosts made it very difficult for the belgians to come across. The Fench where very motivated for the title and played -succesfully- good defensive football. In those days, in very earlly stages of perfecting it right.

1954 Switserland (Group stage)
Due to the war, political difficulties and well, not very food football of the Belgian side, it would take 16 years before the Red Devils could make it to a world cup again. Not a very succesfull campaign, it resulted in a tie against Engeland. And early a defeat against Italy 1-4.

1970 Mexico (Group stage)
It had to be sead. The group where the Red Devils ended up had probablly some tough opponents. The hosts, Mexico, USSR and El Salvador. They won 3-0 against El Salvador but lost against a very stong USSR 1-4 and in front of 109,000 spectators played there best game losing just 1-0 with a very late goals of the Mexicans…

1982 spain (Second round)
After becoming the group winners in front of a very strong Argentina and Hungary they lost all three matches in the second round. They lost against Poland and the USSR in a full Camp Nou. A pretty good campaign the base of a great Belgain team was sead to perform well in the world of international football.
