Bent gets England call but Owen misses out
November 9, 2009
England coach Fabio Capello has named his squad for the friendly against Brazil on the 14th of November with Sunderland striker Darren Bent getting a recall to the squad but Michael Owen again being overlooked meaning there are now even more strikers ahead of him in the pecking order.
There have been call ups for Tom Huddlestone and Stephen Warnock but David Beckham will miss the match due to club commitments with LA Galaxy.
The match in Qatar is the penultimate game before coach Fabio Capello names his provisional World Cup squad.
Sunderland forward Bent, who has eight Premier League goals, will be looking to shine in the absence of the injured Emile Heskey.
Bent, 25, has made one appearance under Capello, while Warnock, 27, made an eight-minute substitute appearance in Trinidad last year and Huddlestone, 22, is still to make his senior debut.
Beckham, 34, was initially included in Capello’s squad but under the proviso that he would be released if the Galaxy beat Chivas in the MLS Western Conference semi-final on Sunday.
England go into the match with a lot of players missing through injury like Rio Ferdinand, Steven Gerrard, Ashley Cole, Aaron Lennon and Carlton Cole which gives some of the fringe players a chance to shine.
