Big Decisions and Interests for Croatian Internationals

August 15, 2008

Corluka toTottenham? This was the big question last week when Tottenham made a bid on the Croatian international, Vedran Corluka. It has been speculated that he could be destined for a season with the Spurs and national team mate Luka Modric. He is currently at Manchester City where he was bought only last year from Dinamo Zagreb in Croatia. According to the Daily Mail and the Croatian Times, Spurs showed interest in the right-back defender a year ago before his move to England. Manchester City coach, Mark Hughs, was undecided about selling his top class player to the Lilywhite’s side of London. However, the decision was to be made on Monday August 11th, and it seems that Corluka will be staying with Manchester City. Although, if the transfer had worked as planned and Spurs had paid off the price-tag on David Villa and/or Andrei Arshavin, it would have brought their summer spending total to about 70 million.

Some more news out of England concerns Eduardo Da Silva, know as Dudu in Croatia. He is more than ready to come back to football with Arsenal, but a bit more recovery time from his injury is still needed. He is now back in London for the end of his rehabilitation process, following about four months of recovery in Brazil. The last time we heard from Dudu he was waiting with team mates at Arsenal for his test results. In an interview with Arsenal TV he stated, “I hope that I will find out exactly how long it will take me to come back to training with my team mates. I want to find out, as well, when they think I can play again. My hope is that it is before Christmas.”

Some top news coming from Germany is about Croatian midfielder, Ivan Rakitic and how he is on his way to a career of success. Franz Beckenbauer predicts, “He will come up in the world;” after his performance at the Euro he should be one step closer. His professional football debut was in 2005, on the 25th of September, where he played in Basel, Switzerland. During his second season there he scored 11 goals in 34 games, and was named the league’s best young player of the year. Last summer, he signed on with Germany’s Shalke 04 and has been doing quite well. This summer, Italian side Juventus has shown some interest in the young Croatian. Rakitic responded to their interest by saying, “Knowing major European teams such as Juventus are interested in me is a great honor.”
