August 19, 2008

Olympic women’s semi-final scores:
Brasil 4-1 Germany
USA 4-2 Japan

Both Brasil and the United States of America overcame early conceded goals to thump opponents Germany and Japan in the Olympic women’s tournament semi-finals.

Birgit Prinz of Germany scored in the 10th minute.  Brasil then replied with four goals by Forminga (43′), Cristiane (49′, 75′) and Marta (53′).

Similarly, the US overcame early Japanese dominance in midfield and a 15th minute goal by Japan’s Shinobu Ohno.  American Angela Hucles equalised and Lory Chalupny soon added another right before the half.

The US completey dominated the second half, and two amazing goals came easily.  Heather O’Reilly chipped the ball over the keeper in the 70th minute, and Hucles added another in the 80th from an impossible angle that was nearly parallel with the goal line.

Japan added a second goal too late, and will have to settle for playing Germany in the Bronze medal match on the 21st of August.

Brasil plays the US in the Gold medal match also on the 21st of August.
