Cannavaro: The Legend…..
February 14, 2010
Fabio Cannavaro is one of the most iconic figures in the history of Italian National Football. He has the most caps of any other player past or present and he was nicknamed, ‘The Berlin Wall’ after his exploits in the last World Cup. The only problem now is that he is aging at a considerable rate, he is now 36 years old. He has returned to the Peninsula from Real Madrid to re-join Juventus, and the debate at the moment is whether or not he still deserves a ticket to South Africa….
In 2006 Cannavaro became the first defender to win the Ballon D’or after lifting the World Cup trophy on his 100th cap for Italy. He was absolutely phenomenal in the World Cup, a Brick wall in the heart of the team. However he decided the Serie B life was not for him with Juventus and moved onto Real Madrid, where he sadly started to drift away from his 2006 form. Cannavaro has returned to Juventus this summer gone to try and confirm his place in Lippi’s squad.
The best situation that came out of Cannavaro’s move to Juve was the fact that he will be playing alongside his current national counter-part, Giorgio Chiellini. This gives Lippi another reason to pick him as they will be training together for club and country.
I believe that Fabio Cannavaro definitely deserves a place in the 23-Man Squad for South Africa mainly for the experience, knowledge and presence he brings to the changing room, but whether or not he will start is another reason.
