Capello praises Beckham over Milan decision

January 8, 2009

England manager Fabio Capello has revealed that David Beckham’s chances of representing England again during the early parts 2009 have been increased by the fact that he is playing for AC Milan.

Beckham has joined the Italian giants on a three month loan deal in a bid to maintain his match fitness during the LZ Galaxy close season. This is turning out for be a crucial move for the midfielder as Capello has said that there was no chance that Beckham would have been called up had he not joined Milan.

Beckham obviously has ambitions to represent England in the 2010 World Cup and the football odds are more likely to favour this now that he has shown his determination to stay match fit all year round.

Capello went on to say that the experience of playing for Milan will leave Beckham in ‘good condition to play with the national team’ and that competing in a league as tough as that in Italy will be ‘invaluable to him’.

It would be a real bonus for Capello and England if Beckham can perform on the pitch during his time in Italy as well. It would prove that he still has what it takes to perform at the highest level. This has been called into question since he decided to move to America, so it will be interesting to see what type of impact Beckham makes.

This gets me thinking about something else though. What if Beckham really impresses during his time as an AC Milan player and they want to keep him? Putting his commitments to LA Galaxy aside, could he really turn down the chance to play regularly in one of the best leagues in Europe?

In terms of his chances of making the 2010 World Cup, he would be pretty foolish should he reject the opportunity. This is all in the future though and for now we can look forward to his official debut this weekend against Roma.
