Cole Ineligible

Nigeria had called up Carlton Cole to the squad for the forthcoming 2010World Cup qualifier only to now find out he is ineligible.

Cole had been keen at one point to play for Nigeria, where his father is from, but he accepted an England under- 21 call up as he though he had been overlooked by the Nigerian Football Federation.

You are allowed to make junior appearances for one country and go to another country you are eligible for but as soon as you play to under-21 level or above you can only play for that country.

Bizarrely the other new addition to the Nigerian squad, defender Daniel Ola holds a Ghanaian passport.
