Croatia captain retires

Croatian captain Niko Kovavc has retired from international at the football leaving Croatia needing a new captain to lead them through the remaining qualifying games for the 2010 World Cup.

“The decision has been made. I will never play for Croatia again. It wasn’t easy to decide this, because I have achieved a lot with the national team, as a person and as a footballer,”

The Austria Salzburg midfielder made his Croatian debut in 1996, he missed out on the 1008 World Cup due to injury but appeared in the 2002 World Cup and Euro 2008 but both times Croatia failed to progress form the group stages.
