Dutch value for World Cup glory
April 19, 2010
After two failed efforts in recent tournaments Holland will be revved up for glory in South Africa and at odds of 16/1 they look a good value World Cup bet.
The Dutch were beaten in the quarter finals by Russia at Euro 2008 and knocked out by Portugal in the round of 16 during the last World Cup, but things have changed since then.
Under new manager Bert van Marwijk the Dutch haven’t dropped a point in a competitive match, racking up eight wins from eight in qualifying.
During this run they scored 17 times, but only conceded two goals and proved to be a tough nut to crack at the back.
The core of the line-up has changed and so have the methods behind the scenes, meaning the Dutch a different proposition to recent years.
Their attacking instincts are still there, but they looked strong and determined in qualification and should easily account for their Group E opponents - Denmark, Japan and Cameroon.
Once into the knockout stages they will be dangerous opponents for one of Italy, Paraguay, New Zealand or Slovakia.
The spine of van Marwijk’s side looks strong with John Heitinga and Joris Mathijsen marshalling the defence.
Wesley Sneijder is a world class midfielder, while Mark van Bommel and Nigel de Jong are steadying influences who counter the attacking flair of Rafael van der Vaart, Arjen Robben, Robin van Persie, Klass-Jan Huntelaar and Dirk Kuyt.
Van Marwijk looks to have assembled a squad with nice balance and they could well be serious contenders in South Africa.
Many pundits will make Holland a World Cup tip, although they will view them as dark horses rather than dead certs.
