England Move Up In Fifa Rankings

March 31, 2010

The Fifa Coca Cola World Rankings have been updated and there is plenty of movement in the top 10. The primary reason for the movements is the devaluation of some results from last year, in particular some World Cup qualifiers.

The main top 10 movers are Portugal who jump two places to 4th, leapfrogging Italy and Germany who drop a place to 5th and 6th. England have swapped places with France moving up a place to 7th, and Croatia have moved back into the top 10 in 10th spot, displacing Greece. Argentina remain at 9th.

The top three all remain the same with Spain leading the way from Brazil and then Netherlands.

Further down the table Australia have broken into the top 20 and now sit at 19th, a rise of four places. Other notable movers are Norway who rise 9 places to 24th, and Turkey who move up six places to 35th. Egypt’s African Nations success has brought them a three place rise to 14th.

The biggest mover overall was Senegal who’s good recent form has seen them shoot up 22 places to 72nd.

What this means for the World Cup this summer is ‘not very much’ in all likeliness but those countries on the move in the rankings are obviously in good form and could be ones to watch in South Africa this summer.

At the foot of the rankings are a clutch of countries who can only dream of contesting a World Cup. Propping up the rest of the world on zero points are San Marino, Anguilla, Montserrat, American Samoa, Central African Republic, and Papua New Guinea.
