England v Egypt An Opportunity To Test Out England World Cup 2010 Squad Hopefuls

March 2, 2010

This week’s World Cup 2010 warm up is England v Egypt and it is an ideal opportunity for Fabio Capello to test some untried England players alongside regulars and his decisions may have been made a little easier with several key players missing.

The most high profile position at the moment is the left back position. Ashley Cole is injured and Wayne Bridge has obviously made himself unavailable for selection so we are down to Leighton Baines and Stephen Warnock to battle it out for the deputy spot in that position. Both players are likely to be given a run out on Wednesday.

We should also get some hints about who is expected to partner Wayne Rooney up front at the World Cup. If England are going to justify the England World Cup Odds they will need to get the best out of Rooney and on Wednesday it will be one of Emile Heskey, Peter Crouch, Jermain Defoe or Carlton Cole who get the nod. There is little doubt that Emile Heskey gets the best out of his striker partners but can you afford to have a striker at the World Cup who can’t score goals? Carlton Cole could end up proving the best option as he offers more dimensions than his competitors

There will also be an option for a central defender to stake a claim, certainly as first back up but potentially as a starter with John Terry not in great form and Rio Ferdinand once again missing with his troublesome back problems. Terry will start the game alongside Matthew Upson in all probability but Joleon Lescott will be hoping he deserves that, whilst Ryan Shawcross has been handed a chance to impress and could come off the bench to stake his claim.

Arguably England’s biggest problem area is in goal and Joe Hart is back in the squad after his impressive form this season for Birmingham, it is hard to say Robert Green is anything better than a solid keeper and David James has been a great servant but has struggled with injuries all season and will hardly get to the World Cup full of confidence after his season with Portsmouth. Many fans will be hoping Joe Hart starts the game and puts in a good performance so he can make the number one jersey his own, maybe even for the next ten years.
