FIFA deny 2010 World Cup insurance plan
April 9, 2008
FIFA have allegedly demanded that the British newspaper “The Guardian” retract claims that FIFA have established a £400m insurance fund to assist South Africa if they fail to keep their preparations for the 2010 World Cup finals on schedule.
The story was written by “Digger” columnist Mark Scott and was published online on the 2nd April. The article can be viewed here.
The article alledges that FIFA had taken the decision to create their own insurance fund of approximately £400m to be used to help South Africa if serious problems occured, insurance companies were unwilling to provide cover for the event. The concerns hinge over fears that the 2010 World Cup stadiums would not be completed in time for the finals.
However, FIFA have denied these allegations and are believed to have written a strongly worded letter to the newspaper which demands a withdrawal of the story on the grounds that it is ‘factually wrong’.
Only time will tell if the paper apologies but what is really wrong with FIFA putting money aside to help? In South Africa things happen slowly and always have, but the cricket World Cup was success as was the Rugby World Cup, as will be the football World Cup in 2010.
