Fresh blow to Portugal 2010 hopes

October 16, 2008

Portugal’s 2010 World Cup hopes suffered a major setback after they were held at home by 10 man Albania on Wednesday.

The result leaves Portugal in third place in Group 1, having picked up just five points from their opening four group games.

After suffering a 3-2 reverse in their last home match, Portugal appeared to have turned the corner with a 0-0 draw away to Sweden, but were unable to break down a stubborn Albanian backline.

The most notable event at Braga’s AXA Stadium was a second yellow card for Albania’s Admir Teli in the 42nd minute, after having come on as a substitute eighteen minutes earlier.

Denmark currently occupy top spot in the group and have a game in hand against Sweden. Hungary also kept up their challenge with a 1-0 victory in Malta.
