Georgia sack coach Toppmoller

April 2, 2008

German coach Klaus Toppmoller has been sacked as manager of the Georgia national football team, the Georgian Football Federation announced on Wednesday.

The news just comes just one week after Georgia were thumped 4-1 by Northern Ireland in a warmup match for the 2010 World Cup qualifying campaign.

Nodar Akhalkatsi, chief of the GFF, confirmed that the settlement of Toppmoller’s contract had been concluded and that they had already in mind several candidates to replace the German coach.

“We were really upset with our team’s performance in the EURO 2008 qualifying campaign,” Akhalkatsi said. “I believe we need to find somebody else to improve our performances.”

The Georgians finished a disappointing sixth place in their qualifying campaign for the 2008 UEFA European Championship finals and will be looking to improve considerably during the World Cup qualifying campaign.

This time, they face an easier qualifying section, although it does include reigning World champions Italy as well as Bulgaria, Ireland, Crprus and Montenegro.
