Italy edge out stubborn Montenegro
October 15, 2008
Newcomers Montenegro weren’t far away from a true stunt in their away match to Italy on Wednesday, but the world champions eventually walked away with the points.
Alberto Aquilani opened the score for the home team after just eight minutes but Mirko Vucinic, who as AS Roma player is familiar with Italian football, levelled the score eleven minutes later.
Unfortunately for Vucinic, who knew the game’s venue in Lecce well after having spent five years of his career playing for the local club, Aquilani soon added another to restore Italy’s lead.
Having earned ten points from their first four games, Italy lead in Group 8. Ireland have three points less but do have a game in hand.
