Lehmann retires from international football

August 11, 2008

German goalkeeper Jens Lehman has retired from International football at the age of 38.

He has only recently moved from Arsenal to Stuttgart but has only signed a one year deal and is giving no guarantees he will play on after that year.

This opens up the opportunity for some of Germany’s younger goalkeepers to try and grab the number 1 jersey and star in the qualification for the 2010 World Cup Finals .

Lehman made 61 appearances for Germany , the last being in this years Euro tournament where he as the second oldest player.

Lehman said ”I suggested to him (Low) and to (goalkeeping coach) Andreas Koepke that they no longer include me in their plans for the German national team,”
