Lennon facing World Cup conundrum
February 1, 2010
England and Tottenham star Aaron Lennon could require surgery on a hernia problem which will sideline him for around two months. It’s desperate news for the 22-year-old winger as he is already facing stiff competition to make England’s World Cup party.
The former Leeds player has been in scintillating form this term and a continuation of his fine efforts this season would undoubtedly see Fabio Capello include him on the plane to South Africa.
However, surgery and a further two-month absence could now be on the cards for Lennon who has not kicked a ball for Tottenham since December 28th.
Spurs chief Harry Redknapp hopes his inspirational wideman will not need an operation.
“Aaron had another scan and it showed there could be a slight hernia problem,” he said in the Sun.
“He feels he can get through it, so we’re going to continue to train him for a couple of weeks, work with the physios and see how it goes.
“If after that he needs the hernia operation, we’ll have it done.
“But he feels there’s a chance he can get through. He could be back in a couple of weeks for us and that’s what we’re hoping for.
“It’s a difficult one. He could have an operation on the hernia now but then he still hasn’t recovered from the other problem with the groin.
“He’s got the World Cup coming up. He might not need an op, if he can get away with it, then fine. We’ll just see how it goes.”
Tottenham’s Premier League odds currently suggest they are in with a chance of finishing fourth.
However, they will have to cope with a challenge from Manchester City who will be desperate to secure Champions League football. In horse racing news, pundits now have more clues about likely Grand National runners after this weekend’s trial races.
