Men’s Olympic football tournament, Day 1 results

August 8, 2008

GROUP A
Australia 1-1 Serbia
Cote d’Ivoire 1-2 Argentina

Two late goals give Argentina and Serbia a point apiece.  A late goal made all the difference for Argentina, who have 3 points now to an unlucky Cote d’Ivoire’s 0.

Lionel Messi, the forward who is spiting his club team Barcelona by appearing for his nation in Beijing, opened up scoring against Cote d’Ivoire at the end of the first half.  Cote d’Ivoire battled well to equalize, but through a few unlucky calls were unlucky to get any more than that.  Late sub for Kun Aguero, Lautaro Acosta, connected with a beautiful Messi cross to put in the winner in the 86th minute.

GROUP B
Japan 0-1 USA
Netherlands 0-0 Nigeria

The US edged a win over Japan to gain 3 points.  Netherlands and Nigeria canceled each other out to each gain 1 point to tie for 2nd in Group B.

GROUP C
Brasil 1-0 Belgium
China PR 1-1 New Zealand

Brasil sits atop Group C with a late goal by Hernanes.  China came back against New Zealand through a late goal by Manchester United reserve striker Dong Fangzhuo.  China and New Zealand both have 1 point.

GROUP D
Honduras 0-3 Italy
Korea Republic 1-1 Cameroon

Three goals, spread around both sides of the half, gave Italy a win over Honduras, and 3 points to sit atop Group D.  Giovinco 41′, Rossi 45′ (pen.), and Acquafresca 52′ (pen.) all added their names to the scoresheet.

Cameroon canceled out a free-kick by South Korea’s Park Chu-Young, to give each team 1 point in Group D.
