Miller wary of Dutch annihilation
March 19, 2009
Rangers striker Kenny Miller is hoping Scotland can perform better than the last time the two countries met. Scotland suffered one of their heaviest ever defeats at the hands of the Dutch getting beat 6-0 in the Amsterdam stadium.
But Miller, 29, said the World Cup qualifier on 28 March offered George Burley’s side the chance to shine.
“We’re a better squad and are better equipped to face a team like the Netherlands,” the Rangers forward said.
Miller only came on as a substitute when the teams met 6 years ago but admits Scotland were “taught a lesson”
“We’ll be harder to beat and more aware of what a team like that can do to you,” he said.
“I never really thought of that game until this fixture came around. But this will be a totally different game and totally different squad.”
Scotland are currently sitting second in Group 9 but only have four points from three games with the Dutch leading the with 9 points.
Miller said he retained hopes of qualifying for the finals in South Africa.
“There’s always a chance,” he said. “If we can get the right results then we could still win the group.
“But I think if you’re being realistic second place is something we’re definitely aiming for.”
Miller said the Netherlands had some superb players at their disposal and were one of the best international sides in the world.
“They will have dangers all over the pitch and we’ll really have to be on top of our game,” he added.
Miller admitted he was disappointed with his form for Rangers during the Christmas period, but believes his displays had improved recently.
Scoring for Rangers against Hearts at Ibrox on Saturday would give him an added boost ahead of the World Cup qualifier in Amsterdam, he added.
“I’m sure the manager would like to see all five of his forwards scoring to give him a bit of a headache,” he said.
“Whatever system we play, we’ve got some really good footballers who can, on their day, decide any match but we will have to take any chances that come our way.”
