Olsen appointed caretaker coach of Norway

Egil Olsen has been appointed as caretaker manager for Norway after Aaage Hareide quit in December. He is initially only taking charge of 3 friendlies but if he manages to do well he may be asked to lead them through the qualification for the 2010 World Cup.

Olsen led Norway to the 1994 and 1998 World Cups before stepping down more than 10 years ago.

“I’m happy to be allowed to do a job for the national team and for Norwegian football, and I want to contribute as long as there is a need for it,” Olsen, who had a brief and unhappy spell at Wimbledon, said.

Scotland drew 0-0 with Norway at Hampden in October and George Burley’s side travel to Oslo on 12 August.

Prior to the return clash with Scotland, Norway visit Macedonia and Holland on World Cup qualifying duty in June.
