Royal Bafokeng Stadium

February 25, 2008

The Royal Bafokeng Stadium was initially built as a Rugby Union ground, but has been chosen as one of ten venues for the 2010 World Cup finals.

The stadium, located in Rustenburg, was originally built for the 1995 Rugby World Cup Finals and was named after the Royal Bafokeng Nation.

The stadium belongs to the muncipality of the rich region of Bafokeng, which is extremely wealthy as a result of platinum mining in the area. Consequently, the stadium is maintained in excellent condition and despite it’s relatively limited capacity, is one of the nicer grounds being used during the 2010 finals in South Africa.

The stadium was upgraded for 2010 from a capacity of 38,000 but also received installation of new electronic scoreboards and the upgrading of the floodlights and public address system.
