Schuster Poised To Take Ivory Coast Job
March 24, 2010
Former Real Madrid manager Bernd Schuster has revealed that he is on the verge of coaching Côte d’Ivoire at the World Cup finals in South Africa.
Schuster claims for becoming the next manager of the Elephants’ arrive after they parted company with Vahid Halilhodzic following the African Cup of Nations in January.
If the 50-year-old German coach becomes the national team manager, it would bring an end to speculation linking him to a return to Bundesliga.
And Schuster – who won the Primera Liga title during his stint at Real – says the deal will be completed shortly, and he expressed his excitement at the prospect.
He told the German newspaper Express: “I can coach the Ivory Coast, but only during the World Cup in South Africa.
“That would be a fantastic thing. The decision will be made in the next few days.”
Despite the prospect of leading the side in Group G, Schuster admitted the role would be temporary for the showpiece event in June.
The German has been heavily linked with a switch to defending Bundesliga champions Wolfsburg next season, and he admitted a return to domestic management for the new campaign was his preferred choice.
He added: “I am very motivated by the Bundesliga. There are fantastic stadia, incredible fans and I still have a score to settle.
“I want to prove also in Germany that I am an excellent coach.”
