Seedorf backs Beckham for World Cup squad

November 4, 2009

AC Milan star Clarence Seedorf believes that there should “not be any discussion” over David Beckham’s place in England’s World Cup squad.

The Netherlands international is a fan of the former England captain and told BBC Sport: “There should not be any discussion for anybody in England about taking David to what will most probably be his last World Cup.

“His will to perform and still play for the national team is very big.”

Seedorf is set to be reunited with Beckham when the 34 year old returns to the San Siro on loan in January. Asked whether Beckham is still good enough and fit enough to make an impact at the World Cup, Seedorf’s response was firm.

“Of course he is” said the Dutchman.

“He showed that here with Milan and he will definitely show it again once he’s back, there is no doubt about that.”

Since being dropped by former England manager Steve McClaren, after the 2006 World Cup, Beckham has struggled to cement his place in the national squad. However, an impressive loan spell at Milan during the 2008-09 season helped to reaffirm his place in the England reckoning and current boss Fabio Capello has rewarded Beckham with regular substitute appearances, which included a man of the match display against Belarus.

Prior to next Summer, one of his main tasks will be to help turn around the fortunes of AC Milan. The Rossoneri have been struggling for form in this Serie A season but Seedorf thinks that the midfielder’s return may help to galvanise the club.

“He was already a great help last year,” said the 33 year old.

“I’m very happy that he will be back again as we also became friends.

“We all know Beckham. The most important thing is that he is going to bring a lot of professionalism and personality with his game.”

He added: “His specific qualities are well known but what we need in a team of AC Milan players are those who are not afraid to play the big games and not afraid to take responsibility - and David is such a player.”
