Who would you take for the England’s World Cup Squad?
May 7, 2010
The bulk of the England squad virtually picks itself, but there are a number of places still up for grabs, most notably in the defensive positions and up front.
John Terry and Rio Ferdinand are probably the first choice central defenders but Ledley King should be chosen, such has been his outstanding form when he has played this season.
His injury problems are well-documented, but the Tottenham skipper was fantastic in the victory at Manchester City last night in what was his second game inside a week.
England coach Fabio Capello was watching in the stands at Eastlands and he must surely have impressed with King, while his Spurs’ teammate Michael Dawson should also be chosen as he’s been a stand-out, consistent performer throughout the entire campaign.
If fit, Glen Johnson and Ashley Cole are likely to start in the full back positions.
Everton’s Phil Jagielka is back fit after a serious knee problem and, although his preferred position is at centre half, he has performed well at right back for the Toffees in recent games and his versatility could be attractive to Capello.
Midfielders Barry, Gerrard, Lampard and Milner are certainties to go and Man City winger Adam Johnson, Arsenal’s Theo Walcott and fit-again Chelsea star Joe Cole should also be chosen.
With Walcott also able to operate up front, only four strikers are needed in the 23 – made up of Wayne Rooney, Peter Crouch, Jermain Defoe and Emile Heskey.
It was a close call between Emile Heskey, Darren Bent, Carlton Cole and Bobby Zamora. Although the Sunderland striker has scored more goals than any other English front man this season, I believe Capello loves either Crouch or Heskey to pair up either with Rooney and Defoe more.
