Women’s Olympic semi-finals: Brasil to face off with Germany; 3rd placed Japan plays top seed USA

USA 2-1 Canada


Angela Hucles gave the US a lead in the 12th minute, but Christine Sinclair tied it up with a brilliant 22-meter shot in the 30th minute.  After a 2 hour suspension (due to lightning), Natasha Kai headed in an extra time winner to give the USA a spot in the final four of the Women’s Olympic football tournament.


Brasil 2-1 Norway


Brasil easily came past Norway.  Star forwards Daniela and Marta took advantage of mistakes by the Norwegians an converted into beautiful goals.  Daniela drove a 30-yard shot in the 44th minute, and Marta sealed the deal in the 57th with a chip over the Norwegian keeper.  Brasil held onto their lead even after the Norwegians were given a penalty in the 81st minute.


Germany 2-0 Sweden


Two goals in extra time gave Germany a win over Sweden.  They play Brasil in the semi-final on the 18th of August.


China 0-2 Japan


3rd-placed in their group, Japan beat out first-placed China through an early goal by Japanese star footballer Homare Sawa.  Yuki Nagasato added a goal in the 80th minute to seal the deal.  The two goals give Japan a semi-final game versus the United States on the 18th of August.
