Coyle Won’t Stand In the Way of Cahill

April 30, 2010

Bolton manager Owen Coyle will not block Gary Cahill from moving away if a big club comes in with a lucrative bid for the defender. Cahill has been linked with a summer switch to several top clubs in England.

Cahill has won the admiration of Manchester United and the 24-year-old’s high-quality performances this season have seen his reputation grow and become an option for Fabio Capello’s England squad for the World Cup.

And Coyle says he will not stand in the way of Cahill’s ambition.

“I have always said, regardless of what club I am at, that if there comes a time when any player outgrows the football club, I won’t be the person to stand in their way,” Coyle said.

“I said it to my Burnley lads when I was there – if there is something better for them out there, then they would go and blossom. That will be the same with Gary Cahill.

“I have got everything crossed that Gary gets to the World Cup because if he does he will be terrific, if he is allowed the opportunity.

“And if that means that he is elevated to a position where they are all going to clamour for him, then good luck for Gary Cahill.”

Meanwhile Coyle stated his belief that Cahill is better than Tottenham defender and England squad rival Michael Dawson, describing his defender as the “full package”

“For me, Gary Cahill is the full package – and he is only 24, and getting better.”

Ortego Recalled To Argentina Squad

April 29, 2010

Argentina coach Diego Maradona on Wednesday handed veteran midfielder Ariel Ortega a surprise recall to the national team for a friendly international against Haiti and a chance to pull on the Argentina World Cup shirt in South Africa.

Ortega, who took part in the 1994, 1998 and 2006 World Cups, has been pondering retirement after facing serious personal problems in recent years, including a battle with alchohol.

Maradona, who has used over 100 players since taking over as coach in 2008, was forced to dig deep into his reserves once he knew he was unable to call on his Europe-based stars for the May 5 game at Cutral-Co, 1,200km to the south-west of Buenos Aires.

The game, aimed at raising funds for the Haiti earthquake relief fund, will probably be the last for Ortega who has played in three World Cups.

Maradona has also called up a new goalkeeper in Adrian Gabbarini of Independiente while Boca Juniors striker Martin Palermo, who like Ortega is also 36, was also named in the squad.

Argentina are in Group B at the June 11-July 11 World Cup with South Korea, Nigeria and Greece.

Platini Names England Amongst World Cup Favourites

April 28, 2010

UEFA president Michel Platini named Brazil, England and Spain as favourites for the World Cup that kicks off in South Africa in June, but held out little hope for his own country France.

“I have three favourites,” the former France captain, a beaten semi-finalist at the 1982 and 1986 tournaments, told The Times newspaper.

“Normally I have four favourites, but this time I have three: Brazil, Spain and England.

“Favourites, for me, means they have the quality and the capability to win, that they are the three best teams in the world.

“But if you play against France or Germany or Italy, you?re not sure to win. Those three are the best teams to win and behind them you have ten teams that will be very difficult to beat.”

Platini justified his choice of England as one of the favourites for the June 11-July 11 World Cup because of coach Fabio Capello’s nous and the form of key players such as John Terry, Frank Lampard, Steven Gerrard and Wayne Rooney will hopefully all be fit to pull on the England World Cup Jersey in South Africa.

“Why England? Because they have good players. Good players and a good coach. It’s a long time since you won the World Cup and I think you have a good team.

“Great players, from Terry to Lampard and Gerrard, Rooney. You have a good team.”

He added: “Rooney is very good. He is a wonderful player. I didn’t need to see him in the past months to see he was a good player.

“(Lionel) Messi was good at 20, now he’s better at 22. Rooney is the same. Gerrard, too. I love Gerrard.”

Platini refused to back down from his assessment of the English Premier League’s decision not to have a winter break making the national team “lions in the winter and lambs in the summer”.

“Yes I did say that before,” he told the newspaper. “I don’t think it’s the best preparation for a national team for the World Cup to be without a winter break.

“I know Boxing Day football is a legend in England, but you have to decide.”

Platini was less upbeat about the prospects of his own country at the World Cup.

“There are good individuals in the group, but, let’s be clear, there is no great individual,” he said.

Gilardino Thins Pazzini should Get Italy Call

April 27, 2010

Fiorentina striker Alberto Gilardino has backed his former team-mate Giampaolo Pazzini to pull on the Italy World Cup shirt this summer after the forward netted two goals against Roma on Sunday.

Pazzini scored both of Sampdoria’s goals in their 2-1 victory over Roma on Sunday, taking his tally up to 17 in Serie A this season.

“I am happy for him. I believe that he deserves to go to the World Cup and I hope to find him in South Africa,” Gilardino told Domenica Sportiva.

“Pazzini chose to leave Florence because he needed to play, just like I did with Milan. And now his decision has paid off,” the former Milan striker concluded.

Italy boss Marcello Lippi is said to have already decided to take Gilardino and Juventus striker Vincenzo Iaquinta to the World Cup.

Pazzini is competing with the likes of Antonio Di Natale, Marco Borriello, Giuseppe Rossi and Luca Toni for one of the remaining three places up front.

Rooney Wins Player Of The Year Award

April 26, 2010

Manchester United and England striker Wayne Rooney won the Professional Footballers’ Association player of the year award at a ceremony here on Sunday and then declared his readiness for the World Cup.

Rooney, currently out of action with a groin injury, is widely regarded as being central to England’s chances of winning the World Cup in South Africa later this year.

“I’m good,” Rooney told guests at the PFA dinner at Grosvenor House in central London.

“I’m disappointed to miss a couple of games. Hopefully I will play before the season finishes.”

Asked if he would be fit in time for South Africa, Rooney replied: “No problems for the World Cup.”

Rooney dismissed suggestions England could not win the World Cup, which starts in June, without him: “We’ve got a lot of great players. If I get injured, so be it.”

He added: “Watching games is very frustrating.”

Rooney, asked for a definition of World Cup success, said: “Success would be to win the trophy. We prepared well and hopefully we can bring the trophy back home.”

England have won the World Cup just once, in 1966 when they triumphed on home soil.

Reigning champions United trail Chelsea by one point in the English Premier League title race with two games remaining and may need a favour from arch rivals Liverpool if they are to overtake the London club.

“I’m sure Liverpool will want to beat Chelsea,” Rooney said.

“They are a proud club and they are still aiming to qualify for Europe.”

Asked what had made the difference to a season where he has already scored 34 goals, Rooney replied: “The manager (Sir Alex Ferguson) is playing me in a more central position up front which I’ve been asking him to do for a few years now and the service has got better.”

Rooney, twice a former young player of the year, topped a poll of his fellow professionals in England to ensure the senior award stayed at Old Trafford after Cristiano Ronaldo’s double in 2007 and 2008 was followed by United great Ryan Giggs’s success last year.

Cesc Fabregas, the Arsenal and Spain midfielder, was third with Chelsea striker Didier Drogda the runner-up.

Aston Villa and England midfielder James Milner won the young player of the year award.

Former South Africa international Lucas Radebe, who played in England’s Leeds United, won the PFA special merit award for his community work in both countries.

Nakamura Encourages Japanese Players To Move Abroad

April 23, 2010

Former Celtic star Shunsuke Nakamura has criticised his fellow countrymen as insular for staying at home and urged them to play abroad for their own good and to boost Japan’s place in world football.

“Players really need to just get out of Japan and go and play overseas. They are too pampered in the environment they are in here,” the midfield schemer told Kyodo news agency in an interview published Thursday.

“It would be great for the national team if there were 20 players overseas and 13 of them were getting called up for international duty,” added the left-footed playmaker, known for his pinpoint passing and free-kicks.

Nakamura, 31, returned to his old J-League home Yokohama F. Marinos in February after completing only six months of a two-year deal with Espanyol, where he struggled to get a game, playing only 13 La Liga matches.

With the World Cup in South Africa fast approaching, Junichi Inamoto quit Rennes to join Kawasaki Frontale in January, while Shinji Ono signed with another J-League outfit, Shimizu S-Pulse, after leaving Bochum.

There are about 10 Japanese still plying their trade in Europe, including CSKA Moscow’s Keisuke Honda, Makoto Hasebe of Wolfsburg and Grenoble’s Daisuke Matsui — all midfielders who have regularly worn the Blue Samurai shirt.

Japan coach Takeshi Okada has also started calling up Catania striker Takayuki Morimoto as the Asian champions, lacking firepower, face Cameroon, the Netherlands and Denmark in a tough World Cup group.

Nakamura, who started his seven-and-a-half-year stint in Europe at Italy’s Reggiana and helped Celtic to the Scottish Premier League title three times, admitted the Spanish league was tough.

“I was only there for a short time but learned so many things. When you are professional, results are everything,” he told Kyodo. “At the end of the day, I didn’t get playing time simply because I couldn’t make the cut.”

But he said fear of not playing regularly should not stop other Japanese players following in his footsteps.

“Of course players are scared that if they go abroad and don’t get picked then their national team chances will be in jeopardy,” he said, “but if you really want to improve as a player then go and you will improve.”

Torres Thinks Spain England Final Is On The Cards

April 22, 2010

Liverpool striker Fernando Torres believes that England have what it takes to be a finalist at the World Cup if they can get over their traditional mental meltdown at the quarter-final stage.

The former Atletico Madrid player hailed fellow Reds team-mate Steven Gerrard as “the greatest central midfielder on the planet” in his appraisal of England’s individual qualities.

Torres, who transferred from Madrid to Liverpool in 2008, agrees with the bookmakers that England should be one of the main rivals to Spain at the World Cup in South Africa based on the way their team lines up on paper.

Unlike many of his international team-mates, the Spain striker is in a position to judge England’s quality up close in his role as one of the Premier League’s leading players.

But unlike many observers, who place Brazil alongside Spain with England leading the other contenders, Torres feels England are in the top two and a final between Spain and England would be the fixture befitting football’s showpiece match.

“If England can overcome their mental barrier then Spain versus England would be the perfect World Cup final,” Torres told the Daily Express.

“People say that Spain have the best starting XI in the world but when you look at England on paper, they have the second strongest XI in the world.

“In John Terry and Rio Ferdinand they have two of the best defenders. Stevie Gerrard is the greatest central midfielder on the planet and Wayne Rooney is one of the in-form players in football along with Lionel Messi. It’s hard to see a weakness in the England team. All they need to do now is break the mental barrier that going out at the quarter-final stage creates.”
