Honduras secured qualification for the 2010 World Cup after finishing third in their qualifying group behind the United States and Mexico. Honduras were equal on points with 4th placed Costa Rica but had a greater goal difference. Costa Rica proceeded to the play-offs only to be defeated by Uruguay.

The only other appearance that Honduras has made at the World Cup was in 1982 when they finished bottom of their group with only 2 points. The isn’t as bad as it sound with them drawing against the hosts Spain and Northern Ireland but they were unable to get the victory they needed in the final game against Yugoslavia and were beaten 1-0.
